Become a Voluntary

Since 2016 we have a volunteer program managed by the Spanish NGO "Viajes Solidarios Tumaini" that is helping us to make the HKH project more economically sustainable. The beautiful interaction between volunteers and the children of the HKH during these years has been a very enriching experience for both parties.

Here we are sharing with you some of the experiences of the volunteers during these years.

Jesus Barroso

Jesus saying goodbye to the kids

"When I start talking about the HKH children, I cannot find words to express how I feel about them and how they made me feel. Kindness, companionship, solidarity, work, happiness, affection, responsibility... They are just some of the values they show and share every day inviting you to be like them at every moment. I sincerely admire them."

They can't see their families, they can't even talk to them, and yet they manage to overcome the situation in a selfless way and always give you a huge smile. Here you realize how much we complain for no reason in the West and the ridicuolous amount of things we need to feel happy, when they are not at all necessary.

They make you realize many things, you learn a lot from their attitude and, even though you are there to offer your help, you become the most benefited of the whole experience."

Patricia

"I really wanted to volunteer with children. Also, I had been reading about Buddhism for some time and I was very keen on going to a country with a large Buddhist community. When I read that the project worked with children of Tibetan origin from a remote village without access to almost anything, I decided to collaborate!"

Pepa

Pepa with HKH children in a excursion

"I will always remember the time I spent at the HKH. From the first day, Nyima made me feel at home, she is an amazing woman with great sensitivity to others. At the same time, I can say that she is an excellent coordinator of the hostel, she makes everything work thanks to her commitment and optimism.

I feel fortunate to have found this project, especially, for the time shared with the children of Dolpo. Through our living together, the workshops, excursions, etc I learned a lot about their culture and I felt it was a very enriching exchange.

I recommend the HKH as a great place for anyone who is interested in immersing themselves in Tibetan culture and doing respectful and supportive volunteering."

Naiara

During her volunteering time, Naiara did several activities with the children, such as a theatrical improvisation workshops or drumming lessons: "We used some books and tin cans to make our own instruments and then I teach them musical rhythms, which they learn very fast! They liked it and put lot of attention to do it well," Naiara explains.

Actually, living with the little ones has been the best part of her experience. "Living within their culture, in their home, getting to know them more and more every day, seeing their day-to-day and their way of doing things, adapting to them by teaching them whatever little I know, and learning a lot from all of them has been the best part of my trip. They have taught me a lot of things about life in a short time," she says.

Become a Donor

Through a one-off donation, you help us to move forward with our projects; the educational projects, the much-needed infrastructure improvements in the village of Komang, the extra expenses in the "Himalayan Komang Home" and other small educational projects in the Upper Dolpo like the little school of Moe village, etc. Nepal has a very volatile economy and every year we have to struggle with all kinds of unexpected expenses.

Our most important project is HKH because the education of our children is the key to our future. However, if you wish, you can add a comment in the donation form explaining what use you want us to give to your donation.

Bear in mind that whenever a special need or emergency arises –i.e, after an earthquake or other natural disaster, a child needing urgent medical attention, or essential improvements to the HKH building to ensure the safety of children – we may use these donations first while we launch a crowdfunding campaign to raise the necessary funds to respond to the emergency.

Recurring Donation option

If you plan to donate for a period of time, you can use the recurring donation option on the Donation page. This will automatically withdraw from your account the amount you choose at the interval you select (week/month/quarter/year). You will also receive relevant notifications and receipts before and after each payment.

Using this option will also give you access to your Donor Dashboard. There you can see your donation history, print receipts, modify, update or cancel your payment details anytime you want.

Donating on behalf of a loved one

There is also the option of donating on behalf of a loved one. This could be in memory of a deceased relative or friend or honoring a living one. In Buddhism, we believe in karma and rebirth. The seeds left in the mind by the positive actions we do such as giving and so on will ripen in this or future lives by experiencing positive circumstances. We consider it very important to dedicate the merit of the good actions so we have added options to dedicate your donation to the good health and wealth of a living person or for the good rebirth of a deceased one.

Whatever your choice or beliefs we always pray for the happiness and well-being of our dear donors every day of our lives.

Komang village class 5 students on their way to HKH

Every year students from Komang village around 11-12 years old come down from the mountains to Kathmandu to have the opportunity of studying in a secondary school. They normally make this hard journey at the end of November after the fieldwork has finished. They have never traveled anywhere before nor have seen any city. It is quite a shock for them to move to Kathmandu. We welcome them into our HKH family with love and provide them with a home and all the support needed to complete their education in a good school in the capital.

Once in Kathmandu, they stay for around 7 years studying the levels between class 6 till class 12. Kathmandu is a very expensive city, every year the government is increasing the prices of basic food items, and even the school fees are quite expensive too. Their families cannot possibly afford to pay for their education. Your donations are the only chance they have to study secondary level. From there they can prepare for government exams or apply for a good scholarship to be able to go to the university.

Legacy and Planned Giving

Other ways to help

There are other ways to help apart from the standard options on the Donation page. Legacy Giving and Planned Giving are also excellent ways of helping at some point in the future those who need it the most. These kinds of donations are very meaningful for both the donor and the receiver.

These are some of the alternative ways to help:

  • Leave a planned gift in your will;  It is possible to nominate Dolpo Komang Tulku Foundation or Viajes Solidarios Tumaini in your will. You may leave a stated amount, a percentage of your residual estate (what remains after gifts to loved ones and expenses have been paid), or a specific asset.
  • Name us as a beneficiary. You can name Dolpo Komang Tulku Foundation or Viajes Solidarios Tumaini as a beneficiary on your retirement account or life insurance policy.
  • Other types of beneficiaries. You can leave a legacy by naming us as a Transfer-on-Death (TOD) or Payable-on-Death (POD) beneficiary on a bank or investment account, or a commercial annuity. Check with your financial institution to see if this option is available to you.

There are slightly different options in different countries, please ask a local lawyer to see how it works in your country. You can read more information and examples of Legacy and Planned gifts at these links.

Please reach out to us and let us know if you are considering any of these options. We want to know about you so we can honor your generosity and kindness of heart in anyway way we can. The results of your generosity will live in us and, according to the law of karma, their seeds will ripen in future happiness for the donor.
